It seems like everyone is jet setting to Europe or hovering around 30A right now, but if you’re anything like me, this summer seems too booked and busy for that. Between weddings, birthdays, concerts, and other city events, the thought of fitting a real vacation into my schedule and budget is… ridiculous. But hear me out when I say this: I’ll be damned if I go all winter without at least enjoying a place to stay.
Fortunately, it’s possible to have a fun, memorable summer even if you’re not heading to Europe or the beach anytime soon. You can treat yourself (and your friends) to a staycation that feels both luxurious and unique without blowing what’s left of your summer budget. Here, we’re sharing some great staycation ideas that will check your summer vacation box without breaking the bank.
1. Host a themed dinner party
The best part of any vacation is the food, obviously. But you don’t have to be on the Amalfi Coast to enjoy fresh pasta, seafood and endless white wine. Invite some friends and family over for a dinner party themed around a destination. Dreaming of the beaches of the Riviera Maya? Have margaritas, hot guacamole and a taco bar on board. Wish you were in Mykonos? Make sure there is no shortage of fresh vegetables, feta cheese and pita. With menu items, a curated playlist, and some decor (if you’re feeling so inclined), you and your guests will be transported straight to a night out.
2. Attend a cooking class
Embark on a culinary adventure with friends, your significant other, or yourself. Most venues have seasonal and/or themed nights, such as “Down on the Bayou” that will transport you to Louisiana or “Summer in Paris” that will make you feel like you’re dining under the Eiffel Tower. By trying new restaurants and dining experiences while on vacation, you immerse yourself in the culture of wherever you are, and it can inspire you to try new foods. Cooking units create the same environment! The only difference is that the lessons teach you how to recreate the food and techniques at home. Sign me up!
3. Have an outdoor movie night
Take advantage of the nice summer nights and have an outdoor movie night. You can go all out with snacks, drinks, blankets or chairs, string lights, and even an inflatable movie screen or projector. Otherwise, keep it simple by moving your TV outside, popping some popcorn, and resting on the patio furniture. Aside from a bit of setup, the only thing you need to do is figure out which movie to watch. An outdoor movie night is a fun and inexpensive get-together idea that you can plan with friends, family, your significant other, or just by yourself—there are no rules.
4. Plan a picnic on a budget
Whether you’re relaxing at the beach, in the park, or in your own backyard, we encourage you to go into the details and enhance the experience. Instead of simply setting up a blanket on the floor, grab a rug and some pillows to sit on. Likewise, skip paper and plastic and bring proper flatware, dinnerware and glasses. When it comes to food and drinks, you can never go wrong with a charcuterie board, a few appetizers, and wine. Tip: Plan this with a few girlfriends. Not only will you have more fun together, but it will also help divide responsibilities and expenses.
5. Book a spa day
Nothing says rest and relaxation like going to the spa for a vacation. But this summer, going to a local spa (or having a spa day at home) is more realistic — and not to mention more affordable. Carve out time in your schedule and book a massage, facial, manicure and/or any other stay that sounds luxurious to you. This is the perfect way to relax, treat yourself, and escape responsibility. If you choose to book services locally or treat yourself at home, make sure your notifications are turned off and OOO is set.
6. Play a tourist in your hometown
Who is booked for excursions? You’d be surprised how much there is to explore in your own city! I’m willing to bet that no matter how many times you’ve lived there, you haven’t seen or done it all. This summer, go full tourist and explore your hometown for the weekend. Rent bikes, eat at restaurants that cater to you, visit a unique brewery, stop by festivals and farmers markets, and more. Plan a weekend staycation if you’re visiting a new place and want to see as much of the city as you can before heading home. Who knows, you might find your new favorite spot in your backyard.
7. Go Camping (or Glamping)
Regardless of your style (I’m the glamorous type myself), getting outdoors is just as fun and inexpensive as a relaxing vacation. Gather some friends, pack your camping gear and essentials (read: s’mores), and drive to the nearest campsite. You can even set up a tent in your backyard – it’s completely up to you. Spend a night (or more) laughing around the campfire, enjoying the stars, unplugging from technology, and enjoying the best the outdoors has to offer.
