Europe has been hit by record heat waves this summer, and the heat will last longer here. The UK recently recorded its hottest day on record with temperatures above 104F° (40C°). Spain has become the first country to start naming heat waves like hurricanes. The same heat wave that broke records in the United Kingdom was dubbed “Zoe”, bringing temperatures of over 110 F° (43C°) to Seville, Spain. Some predict that heatwaves will begin to change the usual European tourist season. As the temperature rises, one of the best places to escape the heat is undergroundWhere the temperature is consistently mild. We’ve compiled a list of six of the best underground European attractions to beat the heat this summer.
Derinkuyu Underground City – Derinkuyu, Turkey
Imagine knocking down a wall in your house and you’ll find an entire underground city. In the year That’s what happened to one man in Nevsehir province in 1963. After finding a room behind the wall of the house, his curiosity prompted him to dig further, where he created many caves and rooms, an underground city called Derinkuyu.
The exact age of the tunnels is unknown, various experts place them between 1500 and 700 BC.
- Today, visitors can enter the city for 60 Turkish lira (about US$3.35) or opt for an expensive guided tour.

Basilica Sisters Museum – Istanbul, Turkey
The Basilica Cistern, one of the most impressive historical sites in the city, is located opposite the beautiful Hagia Sophia Mosque. The impressive structure is 140 meters (460 feet) long and 70 meters (230 feet) wide. It has 336 columns, each 9 meters (30 feet) tall, and holds 100,000 tons of water.
- Entry to this historical wonder costs 190 Turkish lira ($10.60), and the pool is open to the public daily from 9am to 1pm.
Salt Mine Berchtesgaden – Berchtesgaden, Germany
After boarding a train to enter the mine, venture 130m (426ft) down and over a cliff over a 100m long and 40m wide glass lake. Glowing lights reveal the cave’s salt crystals as you walk on the water. The average temperature in the mine is around 12 C° (45F°), making it ideal for escaping the summer heat.
- Adult tickets are €21 ($21.38 USD) and child tickets are €10.90 ($11.10 USD).
Catacombs of Rome – Rome, Italy
Rome has over 60 catacombs that stretch many kilometers underground. Five are currently available for tour; Catacombs of San Sebastiano, Catacombs of San Callisto, Catacombs of Priscilla, Catacombs of Domitilla and Catacombs of Sant’Agnese. The largest and most visited catacombs are the Catacombs of San Callisto, which are over 12 miles long.
- Visitors can only enter with a guide, and it is included in the entrance price (€10 / $10.18 USD).
Catacombs of Paris – Paris, France
France has recently lifted all of its Covid restrictions, making it an ideal time to visit the Paris Catacombs. Visitors descend a 130-step spiral staircase to begin their tour. While in the catacombs, you will see intricately placed human bones, carvings and inscriptions. Cameras are allowed, but visitors are not allowed to touch anything.
- Tickets for adults are €29 ($29.50 USD) and include an audio guide. Child tickets are €5 ($5.09 USD) and do not include an audio guide.
