Detroit’s first recreational marijuana dispensary is open for business, welcome to “Da Cut”.

“Here we are today, finally four years later, as a full grown adult use and medical marijuana facility,” said owner Al Williams.

In the year In 2018, Michigan legalized recreational use of marijuana for people 21 and older, but Detroit faced some problems.

“We were the last adult-use capital in Michigan, even though we were the first capital in Michigan,” Williams said.

Lawsuits and legal challenges dragged on, but the city of Detroit finally approved 33 retail licenses last month.

Da Cut on Gratiot is a black-owned business and one of the first.

“I just came to support it and see what it’s like,” said one customer.

The store started selling more products on Wednesday.

“This is our Mac-1, this is one of our top shelf strains,” said Brenda Esmeyer, the store’s general manager. “Miracle known as Alien Cookies.”

“I got this and I’m going to try it and see how it works,” said another customer.

The bright packaging includes some attractive names.

Baby jitters are already a customer favorite.

“If you’re at a social event, a meeting — take one and walk around,” Esmeier said.

If smoking isn’t your thing, there are alternatives.

“What you eat, these are the most popular foods here,” Esmeer said. “We’ve introduced chocolate bars that are a little different here. People are used to chewing gum, now we’re trying to get into different types of food.

“We actually put in popcorn kernels, so you can pop that in the microwave for three minutes and now you can pop your popcorn. They’re coming out with some really crazy stuff.”

And Da Cut is selling them.

But they are also there to help people.

“If you have a felony on your record for selling marijuana or smoking marijuana — we’re hiring now,” Williams said. “And we’re prioritizing criminals who may already be in the industry illegally – because it’s legal, and you don’t have to have a blemish on your record.”
