The final exercise, Maranatha Volunteers International’s annual mission trip for high school juniors, recently returned international after a three-year absence from the overseas mission field. One hundred and forty-eight volunteers from six countries, young people who served in different communities, landed in Tacna, Peru.
Three groups were mainly focused on construction, building two churches, repainting the existing Maranatha church, renovating community members’ homes, and building a bathroom for an elderly person. The fourth group focused on health and saw 468 medical patients, gave 62 dental recommendations and passed out 270 pairs of reading glasses. Other outreach activities include delivering food from door to door, picking up trash, distributing books, and promoting future evangelistic campaigns to local Seventh-day Adventist churches.
Significant challenges
Although the large team accomplished a significant amount of work, the project was not without significant challenges. Key volunteer leadership positions had to be filled at the last minute, and Covid issues caused adjustments to housing and other logistics. But for Maranatha manager Rebecca Widmer, dealing with unexpected road closures on these projects is par for the course.

“The final exercise is always one of our most challenging projects, with many moving pieces, but also one of our most rewarding,” Widmer said. “This year was no different. We are often forced to change and adapt. But through it all I saw God working to provide the right person at the right time with opportunities for growth and allowing us to move forward.
The challenges inspired a greater reliance on God, which strengthened the volunteers’ faith, Widmer said. The trip ended with 12 baptisms.
“We firmly believe that God has this project in His hands and at the end of the day God’s will is done. “Teenagers have found a relationship with Christ, each other, and adults who care about them,” Widmer added.

For more than three decades, Ultimate Workout has given high school aged teenagers the opportunity to flex their physical and spiritual muscles. Electronics, parents, and other familiar comforts, volunteers enter the mission field in search of a new perspective on the world, relationships, and God. During the project, volunteers live in spartan conditions while building a church or school, coordinating services for the local community, and strengthening their personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
