Where to stay in New York City? The options are endless.
While you’re bound to love your next (or first!) trip to New York City, finding the perfect hotel for your itinerary can really make or break your trip. The last thing you want to be doing is getting into a cab or jumping on the subway every hour to check off every destination on your list. Take it from us, ping-ponging around the city is not the way to go. Unfortunately, most of the major tourist attractions are scattered around the island so some transportation will be necessary but creating a convenient home base is key when visiting Manhattan.
Start by making a list of the places you’d like to see, the restaurants you want to eat at, the type of shopping you’d like to do and go from there.
“[You] want to feel immersed in the city and a sense of place,” Shayna Mizrahi, travel advisor at Vive Voyage told the New York Post. “My recommendation is to choose a hotel that feels like your ‘home away from home’ [that is] still special and unique. With each area of NYC feeling so [different] in its own way, there is usually a hotel or two that sticks out as somewhere you gravitate towards.”
Similarly, Cylia Blitz, luxury travel advisor at In The Know Experiences noted that “NYC is all about location.”
“Be specific about what you want to see and where you prefer to dine, to make accommodations easily accessible,” Blitz said. “If all your dining is Michelin-star based, you should probably stay in midtown. Should you be going to broadway to shop, stay in Soho.”
Whether you want to live like Eloise at The Plaza near Central Park or enjoy eclectic eateries on the Lower East Side nearby a trendy, boutique hotel — we’ve curated a lengthy list of the best hotels in New York City, according to experienced travel agents.
The Plaza is a timeless option that will never disappoint.

The luxurious hotel is just steps from Central Park, the Museum of Modern Art, 5th Avenue and the afternoon tea is a classic NYC experience that is worth the splurge.
“The history of the building, location, and beautifully appointed rooms make it a favorite of many of my clients,” Greg Kiep, luxury advisor at Global Travel Collection agency told The Post. “[One] interesting fact is that many of the larger suites are on lower floors! When the hotel was built, elevators were a newer technology and not popular so people wanted to stay on lower floors while staff stayed higher.”
While The Plaza is a great option for those who want to spend time in Central Park, two experts raved about the Mandarin Oriental and it’s proximity to the park as well.
“The Mandarin Oriental New York located at Columbus Circle offers a five-star hotel experience with the most spectacular views of Central Park. With floor to ceiling windows facing north, guests can marvel at the beauty of Central Park,” said Christy Danforth, luxury travel advisor for Global Travel Collection agency.
“Waking up to the sprawling views of Central Park and being able to walk across the street to enjoy it is what makes Mandarin Oriental New York spectacular,” Mizrahi added.
“The hotel offers impeccable service, luxury accommodations, excellent restaurants and a spa complete with the Oriental Tea Lounge and a 75-foot lap pool with views of the Hudson River,” Danforth said. “The attention to personal service is incredible. One of my clients who was running the NYC Marathon arrived at his room to find a welcome care package with all essential treats for running and recovery.”
Best hotel on the Upper East Side: The Mark Hotel
For those who want to hang with the likes of Kim Kardashian, Meghan Markle and dozens of other A-Listers who have stayed here, The Mark Hotel is the place to be.
“[It’s one of the] most stylish, unique and luxurious hotels in NYC [and you] feel like an Upper East Side resident, yet [you’re] still staying at a beautiful luxury hotel,” Mizrahi said.
Danforth agreed, “Nothing oozes Upper East Side luxury and sophistication like The Mark Hotel.”

If you’re a Broadway fan and dead set on staying in Times Square, the EDITION is the way to go.
“The Times Square EDITION [is] right in the heart of Times Square [and] immerses hotel guests to the wonderful white walled garden-esque oasis that the hotel creates, while still being [in] the hustle and bustle of the busiest areas in NYC,” Mizrahi said. “[The] beautiful vines surrounding you at the Terrace Restaurant, allows for a tranquil serene moment before walking outside of the hotel right into Times Square.”
“The Times Square EDITION is [in] a central location,” Kiep added. “The rooms feature a luxury minimalist design and the beds are incredibly comfortable. The lobby bar has a great lounge to work or have a cocktail after exploring for the day.”

The Mercer Hotel is an outstanding choice for those who want to spend most of their time in Soho. The building itself was built in 1890 and has become an icon to the neighborhood.

“One of the newest hotel openings in NYC, Hôtel Barrière Fouquet’s New York has brought Paris to NYC right in the heart of Tribeca,” Mizrahi said. “[It has a] intimate and romantic setting, making it hard to believe that before it was a hotel, that space that the hotel has been newly built upon was a car garage.”
“The hotel features 97 residential-style rooms and suites by world-renowned designer Martin Brudnizki, with incredible Parisian elegant [dining] throughout the various restaurants, and a secret, private movie theater that looks like it was out of a luxury residence near the Champs-Elysees,” Mizrahi said.
For the ultimate Italian luxury on the Lower East Side and a unique stay in an understated NYC landmark, Casa Cipriani is a great place to spend your days in the city.

Whether you want to be in close proximity to the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Museum or the New York Stock Exchange, if you’re looking to stay in the Financial District, Mizrahi and Danforth recommend the Four Seasons.

“The Four Seasons New York Downtown [is in] a class of its own,” Mizrahi added.
To catch your breath in the city that never sleeps, Kiep loves the Equinox hotel on the west side for a wellness experience.
“The Equinox hotel is absolutely wonderful — located right in the heart of Hudson Yards. The rooms are well-equipped and the location in one of the trendiest parts of NYC is perfect!” Kiep said. “Guests receive complimentary access to the absolutely incredible Equinox Fitness Club [located on] the property. You can take advantage of personal trainers, yoga, or whatever workout works best for you. Afterwards, enjoy the beautiful on-site spa.”
Aman New York is one of the newest luxury hotels in the city and the brand’s first urban outpost in the United States. For a top-of-the-line experience, Aman will not disappoint.

As the price point reflects, with rooms starting at around $3,200 per night, the level of luxury at Aman New York is unparalleled to any other hotel in NYC,” Mizrahi said.
Aman New York has a world class spa, two signature restaurants, a fitness center, a 65-foot reflective pool, a hair and nail salon, a garden terrace, a jazz club, and a lounge bar. Hotel guests also have access to all Aman private member club areas of the hotel.
“Wow is the only description for this NYC midtown newcomer from Aman hotels. From the moment you enter from 57th street, guests are transported to a peaceful, luxurious oasis in midtown Manhattan,” Danforth said. “No detail has been overlooked at this hotel. Staff provide incredible care for guests — courteous and attentive but in a low-key manner. The Asian inspired architecture and décor provides a warm welcoming atmosphere in the guest rooms as well as the restaurant and fabulous indoor/outdoor lounge spacious.”
As one of the most famous skylines in the world, it’s worth marveling at.
“1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge provides guests with an incredible hotel experience with the most incredible back drop of the Manhattan Skyline. The view at this sustainable hotel renders many guests speechless,” Danford said. “[The] guest rooms, Harriet’s Lounge and the rooftop all offer expansive views of the lower Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn Bridge. I love the easy going, casual yet elegant, earthy vibe to this hotel. It’s a very calming spot to lay your head in a busy city.”
For a trendy and unique boutique hotel experience, Danforth loves The Whitby Hotel as it feels like you’re staying in a “cozy art gallery.”
“The Whitby Hotel located midtown NYC offers a boutique hotel infused with a mix of contemporary art, design, and bright décor. Just walking into the lobby [will bring] a smile to any guest’s face,” Danforth said. “[Each room] provides a cheery respite from the concrete buildings of midtown. While dining in The Whitby Bar and Restaurant for a meal or afternoon tea, guests at this swanky hotel are surrounded by original art, fireplaces, and plush comfy furniture.”
As New York City is one of the most expensive cities in the world, budget may be top of mind. If so, starting at $250 a night, Kiep recommends the Maritime Hotel as a great value option.
“The nautical-themed property has really unique guest rooms and some great dining options onsite. Plus, it is located within walking distance to Chelsea Market which is a perfect NYC experience,” Kiep said. “I love the feel of the hotel, the incredible staff, and the location is perfect to walk around and enjoy NYC.”
