Malaga is a beautiful city and one of the best places in Spain to visit on holiday. Filled with thousands of years of history, beautiful beaches and some of the most delicious restaurants – Malaga is a gem to explore. All this means there are heaps of great things to do in the city and in Malaga for every type of visitor.
I’ve been sleeping on Malaga for a long time!
I normally use Malaga airport as a gateway to Spain’s vast Andalucia region. This was my first mistake!
Málaga is truly amazing to visit and I wish I had known earlier that this gem was worth checking out on our countless trips through the airport.
So, to make it easier for you, I’m sharing some of the best places and best things to do in Malaga when you arrive. That way, you won’t make the first mistakes I did!
Have a wonderful time traveling in Spain.
1.) Visit the Alcazaba
Once you arrive in Malaga, make sure you put the Alcazaba at the top of your list. An amazing place to visit and one of our favorite castles in all of southern Spain.
It was built about a thousand years ago in Al-Andalus, which ruled what is now Spain.
In fact, the architecture is beautiful just to look at – even if you walk around the site a bit. With a garden around the palace walls, everything is so beautiful.
Now, it can get pretty busy on campus, so if you want a quieter experience, make sure to go early in the morning and avoid weekends.
Afterwards, book this amazing sunset catamaran tour with a glass of cava. Doing it off the coast of Spain is a beautiful experience and something we will always love.

2.) Go to the Roman Theater of Malaga
Malaga’s Roman Theater is one of the most important entertainment venues in the world and stands proudly to this day. Yes, it’s a disaster now, but much of the original design is still there and you can’t miss it.
This is one of my favorite things about Malaga, it has such a vibrant mix of history, from Moorish influences to Roman influences.
Once here, learn more about the history of how the Romans built the theater and how it was rediscovered in 1951. We loved browsing the site.
It’s near the entrance to the Alcazaba, so don’t miss it.
3.) Walk through the historic botanical garden
Home to one of the most beautiful gardens in the region and one of the best things to do in Málaga on your way into the city, the Botanical Garden is amazing to see. Locally known as La Concepción Jardin Botánico – you honestly can’t miss it.
Over the years, the passionate team has collected more than 25,000 plant species, which they display at their best.
Once here, take a stroll and learn more about the ecosystem and the conservation work that goes on behind the scenes.
One thing to note, it can be quite intense in the sun, so make sure you take a hat, sunscreen and water with you. If you want some shade, pop into the gazebo and admire the spectacular view.

4.) Explore the Montes de Malaga Natural Park
Want a ramble or a walk? Then you should go to Montes de Málaga Natural Park. The entire area is vast and there are many paths that pass through the crisis to follow the park.
Be warned though, some routes can feel a bit sketchy at times. Especially dirt roads. These can become muddy if it rains, so always be aware of this when driving.
Anyway, like I said, there are plenty of trails (like the Yellow Line) that are walkable, but very wide (like a road) and good for biking.
Also, if you have time, there is a great sunset spot at Mirador de Pocopan. It’s beautiful, but it means you’ll be back in the center of Málaga too late.
5.) Admire the views of Gibraltar Castle
Look, I have a thing for cash and Spanish towers are no exception!
A visit to the Gibraltar Castle should be on your list and if you love history it’s easily one of the best things to do in Malaga.
Not only that, the 14th century palace is one of Malaga’s best sights. Now, the walk to Gibraltar Castle can take around 25-30 minutes, but if you’re a relatively careful walker it’s all easy.
Again, like many outdoor historic sites in Málaga, I suggest avoiding the midday sun and enjoying it as soon as it opens (usually around 9am) or before it closes.
That way, it will be a much more enjoyable walk – especially in the baking hot Spanish sun.
6.) Relax on the beaches of Malaga
Everyone should have time to relax on a trip, right?
Well, if you are, head to Playa de la Malaga, Malaga’s largest beach. Everything is fully accessible and you can rent lounge chairs and parasols upon arrival.
One thing to keep in mind, it can get very busy at peak times. If you want a quieter beach experience, get away from Málaga and drive to Playa Penón del Cuervo or Playa de los Alamos.
Afterwards, catch this authentic flamenco show that is a must-see in the evening. We loved it.

7.) Visit the Malaga Cathedral
The Cathedral of Malaga is as majestic as it is.
If you have time, pop inside and check out the beautiful stained glass windows.
Wow, the tomb and the gothic altar are worth a visit. You can’t miss it.
Afterwards, continue exploring Málaga’s historic center and pop into some of the tapas and wine bars found around the area.
For a better time, head to a few tapas bars.
Remember, you don’t need to get all your tapas in one place.

8.) Relax in Malaga Park
Parque de Málaga is huge, surrounded by palm trees and many avenues. In fact, you can spend a few hours walking around the park and Jardines de Pedro Luis Alonso, which opened in the 1800s.
Once here, make sure you identify the sculptures; The Ninfa de la Caracola, the Escutara del Fiestero and the statue of Salvador Ruda stand proudly in the courtyard.
Afterwards, head over to Casa Lola Strachan for their desserts. You’ll leave stuffed after all the pâtés!
9.) Pop in the Picasso Museum Malaga
No visit to Málaga is complete without popping into the Picasso Museum. You see, Malaga is the city where Picasso was born.
If you want to know more about Pablo Picasso and his unique life and amazing art, it is one of the best things to do in Malaga. It’s worth taking a gander inside and the entire Picasso Museum tour takes about 90 minutes to complete.
Just a warning, there can be long lines to get in, so avoid this by arriving early in the morning.
10.) Explore the Center Pompidou Malaga
Okay, so Center Pompidou Malaga is a pretty big deal in Malaga. You see, the interior is a mix of world-class contemporary art.
You can even see pieces by famous artists like Dali.
Inside, you can spend 2-3 hours wandering through the exhibits. Although, if you don’t like modern art, you might want to miss this one.
