New York State reported more than 1,000 new cases of Covid-19 in one day for the first time since mid-May, as cases increased amid slowing vaccination rates, the spread of the variant Delta and the relaxation of social measures.
Officials reported 1,156 new positive cases, representing a positivity rate of 1.39% and an average seven-day rate of 1.19%.
Andrew Cuomo, governor of New York, acknowledged that the fight against Covid-19 was far from over.
“As long as we continue to fight the Covid-19 virus statewide, our top priority is to continue to bring the vaccine to all communities here as soon as possible,” he said.
A member of the New York City council called on authorities to reinstate mask warrants in indoor public spaces.
“We need to reverse this trend,” said Mark Levine, who chairs the council’s health committee.
He said the use of indoor masks was falling, such as in shops, stores, subways and cinemas. “It’s time to renew the mandate of the inner mask, even for vaccinated people.”
Earlier, Mayor Bill de Blasio said there were no plans to re-impose mask mandates on New York City, as the Delta variant extended across the city.
The strain accounted for more than 40% of samples tested last week in New York City, up from 26% the previous week and 10% a month ago.
This week, Los Angeles re-imposed mask mandates inland, regardless of vaccination status, and San Francisco and Las Vegas issued mask recommendations as Delta-driven cases continue to rise.
“New York City needs to act now to slow Delta down,” Levine said.
