Lubbock, Texas – No. 22 Texas Tech opened Big 12 action with a dramatic upset, downing No. 12 Oklahoma State, 8-7, in 10 innings Friday night at Rip Griffin Park. Gavin Cash played hero, knocking home the game-winning run to make it one game of the series.
After the top of the fifth inning, the Red Raiders fell behind by six, 7-1. Tech scored the final seven runs of the game to snap the Cowboys’ 12-game winning streak.
The Cowboys ended Tech’s Friday night starter Brendan Girton’s night after 3 2/3 innings. The junior gave up six runs, five earned, struck out six batters and got on base with four walks. Texas Tech’s bullpen was fantastic in picking him up as the four-armed battery allowed three hits and one run over the next 6 1/3 innings.
“Definitely the story of the game,” head coach Tim Tadlock said of Oklahoma State going scoreless in the final five innings. “[Garrett] Crowley, [Brendan] Lysik and [Ethan] Coombes et al [Ryan] free. Those guys threw the ball really well just to get to the free.
Ethan Coombs pitched two innings in the seventh and eighth and struck out five of the nine batters he faced.
“He’s got a good arm, he’s got a good fastball, but he’s got a sweeping secondary game,” Tadlock said. “You can tell it’s coming and you can’t beat it. You’re just proud of it.”
Left-handed pitcher Ryan Frye entered in the ninth and ended the game by retiring Oklahoma State in six-up, six-down fashion. Free was credited with the win, moving his record to 2-1 on the season.
“Guys played good defense behind them, maybe we had some luck there,” Tadlock added. “So, we had some luck on our side, which is what you want.”
The Tex-Eighth’s insignificant screams saw them scurry around his command. With one out, the next three Reds hit came thanks to a walk, hit hit and single. Gage Harrelson drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the first run. Kevin Basel singled to score the next two and Austin Green hit a single in the third of the frame to score the fourth run.
Fry capitalized on a flawless ninth and 10th, scoring the final run in the 10th. The redshirt freshman advanced to second on a one-out single and a throw to second. Cash hit an untrackable deep fly ball to left field with two outs against the Lubbock night sky.
Bazzel finished with a team-best three hits and two RBI. He went 3-for-5 with two singles and a double. Green and Tracer Lopez scored a pair of hits.
