Many automakers dream of self-driving cars that effectively move on wheels, but VW is taking it a step further. The brand has unveiled a General Travel “concept study” EV that could replace short-haul flights. The four-person travel pod is fully self-contained (ie SAE Level 5) and revolves around a modular interior that can be customized for each trip. Businessmen can work at a conference table while riding, while red-eye travelers can take advantage of two seats that convert into beds.
Gen.Travel can be more comfortable than some good airline seats. Dynamic light not only helps maintain natural sleep cycles, but also reduces motion sickness. The configuration with the front seats can keep the kids (and let’s be honest, the adults) entertained with augmented reality. While the foam-like cabin is built to maximize outward visibility, it also promises safety and privacy for sleeping passengers.

VW doesn’t list performance. But a combination of AI and platooning (automated driving in convoys) could extend the range, he said.
This is a research project intended to explore driverless pods as “mobility-as-a-service” options. May never be placed in Gen.Travel. It’s a real prototype, though, and VW says features could find their way into production cars. We’re not counting on all the self-driving machines arriving by 2025, but don’t be surprised if the robotaxis of the future looks pretty common.
