Survey results show Americans are favorite destinations for food travel. And its food partners south of the border that Americans still enjoy most.
VacationRenter asked 1,000 (mostly) seasoned epicurean travelers to jam out to their favorite foodie hotspots to discover the world’s best cuisine on vacation. The results confirm that Mexico is the favorite country for foodies, but the research doesn’t stop at Central America. The recently released vacation rental company Finds reveals some fun facts and an exciting global road map for foodies and new gastronomic adventures.
Favorite foodie places in Europe
Italy and France finished first and second for best food in Europe. This shouldn’t come as a great revelation given Italy’s extensive culinary expansion and France as the inventor of Western cooking. A broad knowledge of the basics of French is required to become a successful chef in the US.
What was a mild bombshell was that the UK was ranked third in Europe. English fare might be considered a somewhat dull, fried effort, but London offers some of the world’s best restaurants, so perhaps foodies have turned VacationRenter’s inquiries to the city. This is what a quoted interviewer from London’s affluent community said: “I ate at Gordon Ramsay’s flagship restaurant in Chelsea. I had the white wine risotto. It changed my life.”
Favorite Foodie Places in South America
Although this isn’t much of a rivalry, Argentina and Brazil have rounded out the field for the best South American showdown. Steaks, rich cheeses, and rich sauces dominate the rest of the country’s neighbors, just as its combined borders dominate the landscape.
Favorite Foodie Places in Asia
Surprisingly, Vietnam did not make the list, leaving Singapore and Thailand to represent the best cuisine in Southeast Asia. The city-state of Singapore is famous for its seafood, and Thai food is so delicious that it can be found all over the Western world.
Japan beat out China, Hong Kong and Korea for East Asia’s best price, with the latter two countries not even appearing on the list. Only 46% of people said that Japan had the best food in the region and 39% said China, so this question of countries with the best food seemed to be a more well-divided answer. As noted by one survey respondent, Japanese cuisine can also be extreme.
“I ate live squid in Japan. It was still alive and moving,” VacationRenter quoted the volunteer as saying.
Favorite food place in the world
But it was Mexico who dominated the results. Mexican cuisine was popular among millennials, most likely to be created at home, and a popular international destination for dining. According to Statista’s projected 2021 restaurant industry retail statistics, 44% of Americans, almost all of them, will buy Mexican food at retail establishments. From street food to Michelin-starred restaurants, the country is a culinary capital. This fact is also supported by the evaluation of international foods. A full 66% of the 1,000 respondents say Mexico has the best food in Central America. Considering that its borders once encompassed Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, Mexico is as much a part of American culture as New England or the Pacific Northwest.
More than half of those surveyed described themselves as ‘perfect’ foodies, with only 16% disagreeing with the label. Nearly six out of ten subjects have dined at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Multiple sources confirm that adding just one Michelin star to a restaurant can increase business by 20 percent. And the two stars that jump will double. Along with an expert base, VacationRenter’s findings constitute legitimate guidance.
