While the rest of the world is finally catching on to the psychedelic wave, the Netherlands is ahead of the game – at least when it comes to the psilocybin mushroom. In the past few decades, the country’s laws regarding the so-called “magic” mushrooms have been repeatedly wavered until 2008. The psilocybin mushroom “truffles”: the slightly potent part of the mushroom that grows underground. An entire industry has grown as a result.

Accordingly, the trip to Amsterdam has developed a healthy psychological tourism component. Some people visit the famous city specifically to enjoy these moshes, while others come for their own reasons, tempted by businesses with large, Mario-like mushroom signs and a “when in Rome” attitude. Whichever category you fall into, it’s a good idea to go into your Dutch trip with a little preparation.

What drugs are legal in Amsterdam?

To begin with, let’s look at the legality of drugs in general.

Weed and hash are as legal as possible. “Coffee shops” sell sticky-ikea in abundance, and people smoke openly everywhere. It’s common to smell the aroma of pot wafting around restaurant and bar patios.

As mentioned earlier, mushrooms are small in the air. While psychedelic mushrooms themselves are illegal, truffles are also known to grow them Philosopher’s Stones– They are perfectly legal.

All the other fun stuff—LSD, DMT, cocaine, MDMA, etc.—is still largely illegal, though. Less More illegal than most of the world. If the police catch you with a small amount, the worst you can expect is confiscation and fines. But just maybe.

Where to find psychedelic mushrooms in Amsterdam

Psychedelic truffles can be purchased from any of the “modern shops” (what a fun moniker) scattered throughout the city. These businesses have the same vibe you’d find in a weed or grocery store, with the main difference being the presence and focus on truffles.

I’m a fan of the Magic Mushroom Gallery, one of the oldest smart shops in the city, which has operated from its location in the heart of Amsterdam for 30 years. The store generally has good traffic, but I appreciate how they take a moment to touch base with each traffic buyer, asking if they have experience with the items and offering a few tips to maximize safety and enjoyment.

Where to enjoy psychedelics in Amsterdam

Anywhere, really. Amsterdam is to sum it up in words. Cooling downAnd it’s hard to imagine getting bad juju everywhere you go. Be wary of the bikes buzzing everywhere, but outside of that, wander around and see where things take you.

If you’re in the mood for a little trippy, Bari nightlife, check out the Stone Cafe Bar and Nightclub, where neon decor and a 4 am closing time make for a night of intense psychedelia. If you want to spend the afternoon outdoors, head to the Vondelpark near the city’s key museums. And speaking of museums, the fluorescent art museum Electric Ladyland is more or less designed to be enjoyed while under the influence.

Where to stay in Amsterdam

After a long day of wandering the streets of Amsterdam under the clouds and wondering if you’re walking down different canals or walking the same path over and over again, you need a good place to sleep and relax for the night.

I recommend W Amsterdam for many reasons. First, it’s simply an all-around great hotel, comfortably appointed with amazing service. Second, its central location makes it convenient to get in and out of the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam, and it’s only two blocks down the street from the aforementioned Magic Mushroom Gallery.

Finally, a lot of weird stuff is going on. The decor is whimsical and unique. The shower is enclosed in a very impressive and fully enclosed chamber which gives the impression that you are bathing yourself in a vacuum. And if you’re in the mood for an ultra-quiet soak, the spa – housed in a former underground bank vault – is ultra-refined and super-cool.
