There’s a lot to love about Peacock’s dark comedy, The resort. The show features a top-notch cast, beautiful setting and a stunning score. But its biggest gift to viewers is an unexpected reunion with 2000s technology.
The series follows married couple Emma (Christine Milioti) and Noah (William Jackson Harper) on vacation to celebrate their 10-year anniversary. Although Emma is in physical heaven, she is in emotional hell, questioning her marriage, grieving the loss of her son, and randomly picking up a rotten tooth. She’s miserable, but her spirits lift when she stumbles upon a crusty old artifact in the woods: a Motorola Razr.
After inserting the old SIM card into the Razer, Emma powers up the phone and marvels at its contents. Razer reads text messages, looks at photos and does her own research to find out if Sam (Skyler Gisondo), a teenager, disappeared 15 years ago with another teenager, Violet (Nina Bluegarden). Emma and Noah set out to solve the mysteries in this abandoned mansion, giving viewers a glimpse of what really went down as they flashback to Sam and Violet in 2007.
To give a more authentic feel to past scenes, The resortThe creative team overwhelmed them with throwaway technology. In addition to the sleek silver Razr at the heart of the show, the characters use a hot pink Razr, an iPod Video, an iPod Nano, a Nokia 6700 slide, and more. Combining lost technologies with modern storylines, the show offers a unique and exciting viewing experience. I got to it because I was nostalgic and starry-eyed at the sight of these devices that dominated my middle school. The resortCo-showrunner Alison Miller to discuss the show’s brilliant relationship with old-school technology.
In a phone call with Decider, Miller shared that she wrote Sam Ruther’s voice into the script when creator Andy Ciara joined the project. She had a Razr in college and feels the phone was a big part of pop culture, so it’s the perfect device to base the series around.
“I think there are design moments in technology like the creation of the iPod. Apple has done it time and time again, hasn’t it? These amazing technological advances combined with great design become things that are burned into our minds. Razrs are definitely one of them. I feel like everyone who has a phone loves it.” Miller said.

Props for the show went on eBay. “It’s funny because my niece was at home watching the show, and she immediately thought, ‘Who are all these Razors sitting around?’ It’s the magic of television,” Miller said. “And I was like, ‘Well, that’s the magic of eBay. Miller then reveals that Hannah’s (DB Ryan) pink razor arrived new in the box, giving her a chance to familiarize herself with the tool before filming. “I sat down in Video Village and played with it, because I was really excited to see the quality of the photos and what we could really capture. Want to see Oceania Vista in the photo? “I started running through plot points,” she says, describing the phone as “extremely fun” to play.
Even if you are jealous The resort Stars reconnecting with older technology, Miller said, is that one of the disadvantages of showing existing devices on screen is that they often can’t be used because of software copyrights.
“You can’t actually display Razr software on a Razr screen, so we had to create our own wrapper and burn it into the phone, which means we had to put it digitally because we couldn’t get the rights to that piece of software,” she said. “It’s funny because you can use the tech, but you can’t use the software.” So he was trying to find something that was as close as possible but didn’t violate any copyright laws. He did [look very close, though]. Our designer did a great job creating all these screens for us.

“There’s a sense of nostalgia when you look at this font. It’s like a Minecraft font, right? Because it’s made of bricks,” Miller said. But yeah, that was most of our lives. When you think about what messages you received in that font, maybe from your first lover, best friend or whatever, it was unconsciously burned into our minds during those teenage years. This tells the story of our lives, basically.
The resortWhile creating the world of Sam and Violet, the team strived to be as authentic as possible, but a piece of modern technology accidentally entered the 2007 flashback. Sam uses a more advanced ear when he listens to his iPod on the planePodsIt features a volume control and redesigned ear pieces that fit into the ear holes instead of the old Apple earbuds. The problem? Apple didn’t release EarPods until 2012, so unless Sam is a time traveler, they still don’t have them.
“It’s funny, we went through something when we found out about those [headphones] It may not be correct. The iPod comes with headphones, they don’t have a microphone. But [the one we bought] He happened to have a microphone,” Miller explained. “We were going to get them out digitally at one point. But part of it was exploring all the knowledge we had and didn’t have, which is how I like it.
In Miller’s mind, technology has become a diary for people, which is one of the most important reasons for the event. While the first three installments offered fun nostalgia, fans haven’t seen the last of the throwbacks. “There will definitely be more to come. Another surprise is about to be unearthed. I’ll just leave it at that.
