If it wasn’t clear that the Houston Texans were the NFL’s worst team, Sunday’s 31-3 home opener loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars proved as much.
In the year The blowout loss against the Jaguars was not only their first since December 2017, but they also went 0-7-1 at NRG Stadium after being swept at home by their opponents.
It was never close. It was embarrassing.
And if the franchise is going to be serious about getting back into contention, it will have to make some big changes.
But that’s a discussion for another time.
For now, the focus is on what went wrong on Sunday, and that list is extensive.
First, the Texans defense was an absolute mess, allowing 337 total yards of offense for Jacksonville, including 108 yards and a touchdown on nine carries from Tavis Etienne.
And had it not been for two turnovers forced by the defense, the final deficit could have been far worse.
Meanwhile, offensively, it was more of the same than Texas, who were held out of the end zone for the second time this season.
Quarterback Davis Mills was once again erratic and inconsistent, and the running game was a symbolic disaster minus starter Dameon Pierce.
In fact, Mills eventually finished the game with 33 yards on four carries for the team lead.
With the loss, the Texans now sit at 2-13-1 and are just one week away from officially locking up the No. 1 pick in this spring’s NFL draft.
That game comes in Week 1 with the Texans facing the Indianapolis Colts.
The first game is set for Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
