Lola Tung is poised to become Hollywood’s Next Girl – a feeling you’ll get immediately by chatting with her. The 19-year-old actor from New York City is fresh, unrefined, charming and outgoing — an energy you often see from someone starting out in show business. She made her acting debut in Summer I’m Beautiful(an Amazon original series based on Jenny Han’s popular book series) like the beloved actress Isabelle “Belly” Conklin, and now Tung seems to be on everyone’s radar, including the world’s biggest fashion houses.

Her latest girly move includes a trip east to celebrate Chanel’s ephemeral boutique in East Hampton. Tung dined with Han at Baker House 1650 along with other tastemakers. The next morning, in the pre-noon hours, the actor was on hand to chat with TZR about life since landing the bright-eyed, pot-bellied role. ..and, the emotional upheaval that fame brings to a budding actor.

“I think [fame] It can be overwhelming at times, but for the most part I’m very grateful that there’s been such a positive response. [to the show]” Tung told TZR. “When fans come up to us on the street, it’s so cute and they’re so sweet. Having an amazing support system from my parents to Jenny to the cast has helped a lot, because you’re never alone in your depression or anxiety. It’s okay to feel these things while feeling grateful and happy.

To go back, Tung was a freshman studying at Carnegie Mellon University in early 2021, when she auditioned for the show at the recommendation of her administrator. While the actress recalled that she was focused on her college studies at the time, the opportunity to work on a project under Han’s direction was great. (Tung said she was a big fan of Han. For all boys series.) “I sent tapes from my apartment, and shortly after that, they told me they wanted me to audition for the role, which was amazing. This was the first step, the first time I fell in love. Oh this [role] Maybe it will happen and change my path” she recalls.

Following a life-changing call, Hahn and the producers delivered the good news: she got the role of Hud. Tung immediately called her mother in tears, and that night, she told her classmates. (Constantly glorified by watching Zootopia Together.) Tung broke away from college life that same year, to spend the summer filming in Wilmington, North Carolina.

“Most of the actors come down to Wilmington about two and a half weeks early to start bonding and creating the close relationships you see on the show,” says Tung. “Immediately we all met, which was beautiful and I was just excited for the first day [of filming] And I’m really scared because I’ve never done any film or TV work [prior to The Summer I Turned Pretty]He said. The actor shares that the first scene — which fans will remember from Season 1 — was the “belly flop scene,” in which her stomach (no pun intended) is playfully thrown into a pool by her brother Steven (played by Sean Kaufman) and love interests Jeremiah and Conrad Fisher (played by Gavin Casaleno and Christopher Briney). played in order). “It was a really fun show and it was just us playing and having a great time. From that moment on, I knew it was going to be one of the best experiences,” she says.

Tung and the rest of the cast are currently filming Season 2, but in addition to her acting duties, Tung – as a newcomer to the Hollywood scene – is now accepting invitations from the Who’s Who of Fashion. This includes an intimate dinner, like the Chanel fête, where the up-and-coming actress flexes her fashion skills and shows off her personal off-duty style. At the event, Tung opted for a black cashmere dress from RTW’s Autumn/Winter 2022/23 pre-collection. The LBD showcased the fashion house’s signature range of ideas from the perfume bottle to the double C logo on the front of the dress for a playful and sophisticated attitude. The relevance of Tung. The party dress was elegant and beautiful, but not too heavy like the actor.

She then accessorized with dainty jewelry — “Coco Crush” in 18K yellow gold — and a coordinating black bag and heels from the luxury fashion house. With Chanel Makeup, Tung has mastered that elusive natural, refined makeup look. “Chanel is such a popular brand and they were all very popular at dinner. I wear a lot of jeans, sweaters and tees. [normally]But I also love to dress up and look cool,” she says to TZR. “I loved how simple and unique the black dress was, and every Chanel piece is beautiful and so sweet.”

Her eye for fashion has always been a part of who she is as the actress describes herself as somewhere between a mini and a high dress. “Growing up in New York allowed me to appreciate other people’s feelings and gain a sense of perspective. You can create your own look and I always feel like I have a bit of an edge to my personal style,” she says. “I used to design my own sneakers when I was younger – the Converse website allows you to do that and I’ve always loved it.”

Her experimentation with clothing and accessories continues today as she realizes that she is still in the fascinating process of discovery of refining and defining her personal style. “I’ve been working with my stylist, Britt McCamey, and she’s amazing,” shared Tung. “I’m very lucky to be able to collaborate with her and try things out and have an open conversation about how I want to look and present myself. She’s very supportive.” [me having an edge to my style] And encourages. It would be nice to try something different. [outfits] Ditto for various events.”

As our zoom call draws near – Tung has to fly to North Carolina to continue filming Season 2. I turned into a beautiful summer – One wonders how she finds time to mentally reset between her juggling film schedule and glamorous fashion fads. “I sleep when I can,” she says, laughing. “I like spending time outdoors and I like playing the guitar, but I’m not very good at it. I also like to journal, write poetry and listen to music. I love Lizzy McAlpine – I just turn on her music and listen to it for hours.
