According to Downdetector, there was a significant increase in lag reports for Google earlier today. According to the news wire Reuters:
“Over 40,000 people have reported incidents to the world’s largest search engine,” according to Downdetector, which tracks outages by collecting status reports from multiple sources, including user-submitted errors on its platform.

But such interruptions, however brief, highlight how dependent we are on Google for many aspects of life.
It’s not all bad news
Although Google’s disappearance made headlines around the world, today’s event was short-lived – just like all previous cases.
Google has the capacity and ability to quickly resolve service issues when they occur.
And, as many people have said, you can still search online even when Google goes down — you might have to use a different search provider like Bing or DuckDuckGo.
Even in the unlikely event of an outage, our ability to search for cat photos will not be affected.
