Chico – If you’re looking for authentic Mexican street food, check out Chico’s. Look no further than Lacidad Mexican Grill, which had its grand opening on August 29th.

Located at 645 West Fifth St. #110, the restaurant is located on the corner of Fifth and Ivy in the middle of Chico State’s fraternity and sorority rows.

“We get a lot of student customers,” owner Victor Garcia said. We adjust the menu slightly to meet the financial needs of students.

Garcia says there’s a lot of street food in Mexico City, and that’s what the food is designed for.

“This is the kind of food you get in Mexico City,” Garcia said. It is street food served in the streets and markets.

Garcia was born in Mexico City but lived in Chico for 23 years. He is fluent in English and Spanish.

Garcia’s restaurant is a labor of love that Garcia is experimenting with after working in construction for six years.

“It was an idea that felt natural,” Garcia said. “And if you don’t try, you’ll never succeed.”

One of the most popular items on the menu is the pambazo, which is like a delicious Mexican sandwich. It consists of two slices of bread dipped in a guajillo (chile pepper) sauce and topped with chicken, cotija cheese, green salsa, lettuce and sour cream. Garcia said his mother often made pambazos as a child, and she still makes them today.

Some other popular dishes are huaraches and machetes. A machete is like a giant quesadilla, and the dough for it is made by hand at the restaurant. Huarache is like a big pambazo and served with beans. The main price point for the meal is $14 to $15.

“Fast food is really quick, easy and good,” Garcia said.

Another popular item is agua fresca, a hot and cold drink similar to ice with flavors like pineapple, strawberry and watermelon.

Garcia currently has seven employees, all of whom are part-time except for one full-time employee, manager Victor Velazquez.

Servant Emily Vanes, a biochemistry major at Chico State, enjoys working at La Ciudad.

“I love serving and talking to people,” Vanes said. “Also, I live nearby, so it’s very convenient to get to work.”

La Ciudad is open from 11am to 11pm Monday to Thursday, 11am to 1:30am on Friday and Saturday and 11am to 8pm on Sunday. Food can be served through Grub Hub.

Restaurant information and menu is available on Facebook under Lacidad Mexican Grill and on Instagram under lcmg.530. To-go orders can be made by calling or texting 530-767-3434, which is the restaurant’s main phone number.
