French luxury brand Hermès International has filed a trademark application covering non-fungible tokens (NFTs), cryptocurrencies and the metaverse, joining the wider public’s eagerly awaited Web3 technologies.

The trademark covers software that allows users to view, store and manage virtual goods, digital collectibles, cryptocurrencies and NFTs “for use in online worlds,” according to a filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Also part of France’s CAC 40 blue-chip index, the Paris-based group offers brands such as “retail store services featuring virtual goods,” fashion and trade shows “in virtual, augmented or mixed reality.” And an online marketplace for virtual goods.

Earlier this year, Metabirkins founder Mason Rothschild was sued by Hermès for allegedly using the brand name to market and sell the NFT Metabirkins collection.

In its 47-page legal complaint against Rothschild, Hermes claims that the MetaBirkins brand “rips off” the MetaBirkins brand by simply adding the generic prefix ‘Meta’ to the trademark for the famous “Hermes” Birkin bag, making the MetaBirkins brand appear to be part of the Hermes Birkin brand.

The lawsuit against Rothschild may have prompted the company to offer its own protection for Metaverse, cryptocurrency and NFT tokens.
