The Y2K fashion trend is associated with apparel in bright colors such as lime green, hot pink and butter yellow, as well as distinctive pieces like velor tracksuits, halter tops, baby tees, bell bottoms, baggy jeans, pleated skirts, micro-mini skirts , rectangle sunglasses, bucket hats and platform heels. Twee Fashion
According to the Oxford dictionary, “twee” means “very pretty, in a way that you find unpleasant and silly; appearing sentimental. ” The twee era came right after Y2K, when hipsters switched from flamboyant fast fashion to quirky, kitsch and thrift culture. The twee aesthetic is making a strong comeback due to the recent revival of Tumblr era aesthetics on TikTok.
Jessica Day from the American sitcom New Girl (2011-2018) is the twee queen. Portrayed by Zooey Deschanel, the school teacher rocks mod styles of the 1960s and 70s. Costume designer Debra McGuire has explained to various media outlets that the character’s wardrobe was partly inspired by Deschanel herself. Another twee icon is British model Alexa Chung.
The twee fashion trend is characterized by quaint separates such as oversized blazers, skirt suits, grandpa cardigans, opaque tights, patterned tights, blouses, A-line shift dresses and high-waist shorts, as well as details and accessories like Peter Pan collars, polka dots, nautical stripes, ballet flats, wool berets, hair bows and headbands. Overall, the look channels cutesy indie vibes that resonate with teens.
Hyper Feminine
We’re living in a time of gender fluidity. Androgynous wear for women has been around for a long time, and now the ultra-feminine aesthetic is back in vogue!
