Press release: The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) presents a spotlight on fashion Home, a unique collaboration with Monterrey University’s Department of Fashion Design, featuring portfolios and clothing collections designed and handcrafted by Milwaukee school students and alumni. The collaboration began with a broadcast news report about the university’s fashion design program, which prompted MMOCA to contact the school about a collaboration.

The collections highlighted in the exhibition share a common theme with the premise of the MMOCA exhibition—each reflects on memory, meditation, and the restoration of home. Mount Mary’s designers find inspiration in the places and people that define home, resulting in creations that not only transport viewers, but also encourage awareness of ownership, generation and displacement.

During the discussion, Mount Mary University and MMOCA developed a fashion focus. at home. Central to the collaboration is a course curriculum based on the concept of home developed by Assistant Professor Elena Pitts.

“Mount Mary University ranks as one of the most ethnically and economically diverse universities in the Midwest, and our students recognize the importance of their cultural diversity,” Pitts said. “Our designers use the lens of fashion to express their unique point of view and communicate their heritage and identity.”

Mount Mary University Fashion Design alumni Asma Dasan, Anastasia Gochchina, Maka Muhyiddin and Showa Xing were represented in their junior and senior collections as well as ready-to-wear materials. Current students May Martinez-Gonzalez, Roe Storz, Kylie Stout, and Leanne Monica Wolff shared their process books, presentation folders, and sketches for take-home responses.

In the year Class of 2022 graduate Anastasia Gochuchina, showing off her collection of rare gold, said, “I was born in Belarus and moved to Wisconsin in 2000. My family worked hard with very little to survive, and our comfort was our culture. I grew up being ashamed of what made me different, but now I just see the beauty in it.”

Fashion focus | Home not only provides an opportunity for reflection on the exhibition’s premise, but also shows how deeply personal inspiration can be for artists working in all media. Moreover, it encourages viewers to think about the importance of the clothes they choose to wear and how they relate to individual stories and identities. The partnership will be visible from December 17, 2022 to January 29, 2023. Admission is always free at MOCA.
