AVCA Preview Top 25 – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 9 No

Lexington, Ky. The company announced on Monday. The No. 9 pick in the preseason poll would be the highest received by the Yellow Jackets in program history.

Tech comes in as one of three ACC teams ranked in the top 10. The Jackets faced five opponents ranked in the preseason No. 25 this season: No. 4 Louisville, No. 6 Pitt, No. 7 Ohio State, No. 10 BYU and No. 17 Illinois. Louisville and Pitt each advanced to the Final Four, each of the aforementioned teams reaching the 2021 NCAA Tournament, while Ohio State, BYU and Illinois all advanced to the Sweet 16, while the Jackets eliminated the Buckeyes in their Elite Eight run.

Overall, the ninth place tie for the sixth-highest ranking Tech has achieved in its 42-year history. The Jackets’ selection marks the second consecutive season in the AVCA’s top 10 after being pegged at No. 8 at the end of the 2021 season. That mark is tied with the 2003 Elite Eight team for the most at the end of a season in program history.

The Jackets were named in back-to-back seasons in the preseason poll after ending a 15-year drought last year. Reappearing in the Top 25 for the first time since 2005 at No. 12 on September 30, 2020, Tech has been listed in 39 straight Top 25 polls so far. The Yellow Jackets reached No. 6 for two consecutive weeks in that stretch from Nov. 18-25 in late 2020, the highest ranking by the White and Gold since 2003 and the third all-time mark.

Tech boasts 13 returnees from the 2021 Elite Eight team for the 2022 season, including a reigning ACC and AVCA Player of the Year as well as a first-team All-American. Julia Bergman with an All-ACC second team selection Breland Morissette and a member of the ACC All-Freshman Team Bianca Bertolino. The incumbents are joined by five newcomers, including a pair of transfers in All-Americans. Tamara Otten (State of Illinois) and Tally Marmen (UCF) with new students dear white, Anna Bozzi And Mikayla White. The reigning AVCA East Coast Region Coach of the Year Michelle Collier She leads the Jackets for the ninth time.

Following an exhibition match on the road at South Carolina (Aug. 21), Tech opens the regular season on the road at the Ole Miss Invitational by hosting Ole Miss in Oxford (Aug. 26). Their official return to O’Keefe Gymnasium, hosting the GT Invitational starting in Dayton (Sept. 2).

Tech’s schedule is highlighted by 13 matches against 2021 NCAA Tournament teams, four at home against Dayton (Sept. 2), BYU (Sept. 8), Ohio State (Sept. 11) and Pitt (Oct. 19). The Jackets will host 14 regular season games on the Flats, most notably the aforementioned Pitt matchup at the Thrillerdome. The event will mark the first volleyball match at McMish Pavilion since Alexander Memorial Coliseum was remodeled and renovated. The remaining 13 games will be played in O’Keeffe Gymnasium, including two home contests.
