The Seattle Seahawks are turning into a rushing offense at Lumen Field this season. But it’s not happening at the team’s play-calling, a new food and beverage store using Amazon-free technology is taking place high above the football field.
The stadium will be the first in the NFL to feature both of Amazon’s signature retail innovations — “Just Walk Out” and Amazon One, the entry and payment palm-scanning technology.
The technology will be used in the District Market at the Lumen Field behind the Toyota Fan Deck in Room 323. The group has previously outlined improvements, saying the area will offer a “very modern, open food and beverage experience”. To the stadium to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
Just Walk Out is billed as a quick and frictionless way for fans to avoid concession lines and return to their seats. The technology is used in Amazon Go convenience stores and some full-size fresh grocery stores. It allows customers to check in, select items and check out without having to interact with a cashier.
Overhead cameras and sensors track what a customer is holding, and the payment is automatically credited via credit card. Customers can link a credit card to a biometric scan of their hand through Amazon One technology.
“Our goal is to help fans get back to their seats quickly without missing a moment of the action, so we’re excited to see how NFL fans enjoy the new store,” Dilip Kumar, vice director of applications at AWS, said in a news release. on Thursday.
Amazon has licensed the technology to use in places like stadiums and airport stores. Lumen Field now joins other Seattle professional sports venues using Just Walk Out. Introduced in May at a new “Walking Market,” it will be used in three stores at the Climate Promise Arena, home of the Seattle Kraken, and at T-Mobile Park, home of the Mariners.
GeekWire has tested the technology in the past and talked to fans at Kraken and Detectives games, and the general idea was that getting in and out of the Stadium Shop quickly was a big plus.
“It’s great, there’s no line,” said one fan during the first NHL game at Climate Promise Arena. “I got a beer in eight seconds.”
“This is cooler than standing in line,” a Mariners fan told us when Just Walk Out started at T-Mobile Park.
District Market offers a variety of beer, wine, spirits and non-alcoholic beverages, along with snacks and meals from the stadium’s neighbors in Seattle’s International District. Patrons can sign up for Amazon One at kiosks located outside the store.
Amazon is partnering with Lumen Field and stadium hospitality partner Levy, as well as DBK Studio, Levy’s creative studio. The Techs are slated to be ready for the team’s home opener on Sept. 12.
