If another passenger annoys you on one of your flights, consider yourself lucky! Most travelers have run into an annoying passenger at some point during a flight. The more you fly, the more passengers you’ll see (or smell) who aren’t the rest of the flight’s favorite characters. In a recent survey, travelers were asked what behavior from other passengers irritated them.

Below are the 10 most annoying passengers on flights, as well as the percentage of respondents whose behavior is annoying.

1) Passengers who step on the seat

Percentage of respondents: 59.11%

Unsurprisingly, passengers find the spray behind their seats to be the most annoying thing a passenger can do to them. As a direct physical assault on travelers’ personal space and comfort, it makes sense that this is at the top of the list.

2) Intoxicated passengers

Percentage of respondents: 59.11%

Drunk and unruly passengers tied to seats for 1St place, and it’s no wonder why. Once thousands of meters in the air in a metal tube, there is no way to escape the conditions. Unfortunately, some passengers can’t handle alcohol, which can lead to very uncomfortable and even dangerous situations like the one below.

At best you have to put up with snoring from someone who has had a few too many. At worst, threats of physical violence have occurred. This particular behavior can quickly go from annoying to dangerous.

3) Bad-smelling passengers (or as well as nice)

Percentage of respondents: 48%

Nearly half of the respondents said they were annoyed by passengers who smell bad because of poor hygiene or who wear too much cologne. Being stuck in a giant flight tube with hundreds of other people is enough. Add an unpleasant smell, and it becomes a completely different experience.

4) Travelers who are negligent parents

Percentage of respondents: 46.81%

Parents who are followed by bad-smelling passengers are inattentive during flights. About half of those who returned said parents who don’t watch their children annoy them on flights. Unfortunately, this behavior often coincides with the #1 most annoying thing – Seat kick.

5) Travelers who eat strong smelling food

Percentage of respondents: 39.8%

Similar to #3, passengers who eat pleasant-smelling foods can irritate those around them. However, these odors are not nearly as irritating to passers-by.

6) Passengers who stretch their arms

Percentage of respondents: 39.07%

Nearly two out of five respondents thought that passengers pulling on the seatbelts were annoying. If you’ve ever been stuck in a chair between two arm pigs, you probably don’t understand what they mean.

7) Passengers who always sit in the seat

Percentage of respondents: 38.25%

Seating on airplanes has been a debate among travelers for years. Still, 38% of respondents agreed that this was an annoying behavior.

8) Passengers who talk to you a lot

Percentage of respondents: 29.87%

Being stuck in a conversation is a nightmare for many travelers, but at least while on the ground, there is the option of walking. Thousands of feet in the air, there’s no getting away from a talking passenger. But starting the flight with headphones helps avoid unwanted conversation.

9) Passengers boarding or disembarking outside the turn

Percentage of respondents: 29.60%

Passengers boarding the plane

Everyone saw the excited passengers jumping out of their seats and walking down the aisle until the plane doors opened. Maybe they’re afraid they’ll miss a connecting flight, or maybe they are. Either way, nearly 3 out of 10 respondents found it annoying.

10) Listening passengers have their headphones turned up too loud.

Percentage of respondents: 28.96%

Airplanes are just as loud and often drown out a lot of background noise. If someone’s music is so loud that you can hear it, it’s probably too loud. This is behind passengers who skip boarding, with less than 3 in 10 saying that loud music or movies annoy them.

Interesting additions

Other annoying passengers who didn’t make the top 10 were passengers who take off their shoes, passengers who use more space in front of their seats, and passengers who use a lot of PDA. One thing remains clear. Packing a few hundred people into an enclosed space for a few hours will definitely bring some annoying behavior to your fellow passengers.
